about

Festa celebration of Kamadev..the Vedic cupid infusing the cosmos
with desire and attraction...you drive us all crazy.
The story goes that Brahma gave the demon Tarakasura a boon that he could only be defeated and killed by a child of Shiva that was only 7 days old..which cut the odds down a bit. Tarakasura then began wreaking havoc in the universe, and the Gods decided they needed to take him down.
Visnu and Lakshmi's son Kamadeva had the power to infuse ardour into the heart of anyone (as he was the vedic cupid) with his flower arrows..and as Parvati fancied Shiva, they instructed Kamadeva to wake Shiva from his austerities and to make him fall in love with Parvati. This went terribly wrong and Shiva just vapourised Kamadeva with his third eye as soon as he saw him.
Parviti had compassion on Kamadeva and asked Shiva to bring him back to life..which he did, but only in spirit form (and he is the reason now why everything falls in love with everything else in the universe)
Anyway, Shiva and Parvati finally fall in love, get it together and produce a baby called Subramanium (Kartikeya). And at 7 days old he goes into battle with Tarakasura and defeats him !!
Tarakasura represents the ego. So the moral is, that you have to fall in love with someone and through that messy process ascend to the level of innocence of a seven day old baby before you have any chance of transcending your ego demon !! The Divine Mother will, in her form as Kamadeva, find you someone to fall in love with...if you let her.
